Martin Keown has told Harry Maguire to ‘toughen up’ and tell ex-players ‘where to go’ following criticism thrown at the Manchester United defender.

The centre-back’s position in the England squad has come under question due to his lack of minutes at Old Trafford.

Scotland supporters heckled Maguire’s every touch after he was brought on at half-time, and the abuse only worsened after his 67th minute calamity when he put the ball into the back of his own net during England’s 3-1 victory.

Gareth Southgate rushed to Maguire’s defence after the game, saying the criticism from pundits he has suffered was ‘an absolute joke’.

Former Arsenal defender Keown has now shown his support, telling talkSPORT that the abuse aimed at the 30-year-old is ‘disrespectful’.

Martin Keown has told Maguire he needs to ‘toughen up’ and tell ex-players ‘where to go’

He said: ‘I’m not really comfortable with the amount of criticism that he gets and if I was in his camp, or he was my lad, I’d be asking him to toughen up and tell a number of these former players where to go really.

‘I feel that the criticism that’s come his way has affected him. It’s a tough thing for anyone to deal with, but he’s got to stay strong.

‘Is it respectful if you’re part of his family and you have to listen to that? I feel like it’s a little bit disrespectful.’

It’s not the first time Keown has leapt to his defence, doing so in his Mail Sport column in June 2022.

He said at the time: ‘This isn’t the first time I’ve come to Maguire’s defence. I did it during the season, too. Fans and pundits can provide constructive criticism but at times, it’s felt like comments made about Maguire have fallen more into the abuse category and that’s wrong.

This is a good player who has taken on the pressure of captaining Manchester United and a central defender who has earned the trust of Gareth Southgate because he has been dependable.’

Maguire’s England team-mates have also rallied around Maguire following his own-goal at Hampden Park on Tuesday night.

James Maddison hailed Maguire’s ‘big balls’ in an Instagram post while Aaron Ramsdale described him as ‘one of the best defenders’ they’ve got.

Gareth Southgate leapt to the defence of Maguire after their 3-1 victory against Scotland

There was little Maguire could do as he put the ball in the back of his own net against Scotland

Southgate was visibly angry when he spoke about Maguire on beIN Sports post-match and took aim at pundits who have criticised the defender.

‘He was exceptional for us at the weekend [in the 1-1 draw with Ukraine]. The reaction tonight is a consequence of idiots really from our side who have created that environment,’ the England manager said.

‘So what I think was brilliant tonight was our fans who were here recognised that they’re going to protect their own. We should be doing that.

‘We’re creating a problem for our own player. Some of the articles that were written, some of the comments that were made, were an absolute joke.

‘He’s been a tower of strength for us through one of the most successful periods of English football and the response tonight – I understand Scottish fans, they’re having some fun – but it’s created by our own side, it’s ridiculous.’

Maguire remains a regular starter for England despite barely seeing any action at United.

The 30-year-old had the captaincy removed by Erik ten Hag ahead of this season and has so far played just 23 minutes of Premier League action.

But he started Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifying, continuing his run of England starts, and came off the bench in Glasgow after goals by Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham put the visitors in control.

Maguire’s own goal gave a second-best Scotland hope but Kane sealed victory late on.
