Rangers and Scotland icon Ally McCoist has raged at ‘SNP’ fans who booed England’s national anthem at Hampden Park. The Three Lions beat their northern neighbours in a hotly-contested friendly on Tuesday night, which was accompanied by a crackling atmosphere.

McCoist was on co-commentary duties in Glasgow when God Save the King was drowned out by a section of Scotland fans. The 60-year-old branded the behaviour ‘totally out of order’ and admitted that he stood up to belt out the anthem from the gantry.

“I do not like the booing of any national anthem to be honest with you,” McCoist told talkSPORT. “I just think it is a distinct lack of respect. I genuinely dislike it intensely.

“If you can’t show respect, I am not talking about England, I am talking about anybody or anybody that goes to Hampden, any football ground or any sporting event. If you can’t show the opposition respect by respecting their national anthem, I think it is a poor show.

Don’t miss… Chelsea may have their own Lamine Yamal as Kendry Paez excites on debut

“I get the rivalry with England and Scotland, and I get some of the Scots, perhaps SNP fans, giving it the whole bit, but I am talking about in general. There should be respect shown for an opposing national anthem and I think it is totally out of order.”

McCoist’s fiery rant continued when he was accused of being too pro-English, adding: “What all these guys can do is put their head back under the covers or the pillow.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Actually I was [singing God Save the King]. Because I am British. You got a problem with that?”

McCoist scored 19 goals for Scotland across a 12-year international career. He is also Rangers’ all-time leading scorer by some distance, racking up a staggering 355 goals in 581 first-team appearances between 1983 and 1998.

The Scots appear destined for a spot at Euro 2024 next year, having made stellar progress in their qualifying campaign with five wins from a possible five. But they came out second best in the friendly against England on Tuesday, with Gareth Southgate overseeing a 3-1 victory.

Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham put the Three Lions two goals up by half-time. And while Harry Maguire’s own goal gave the hosts hope, Harry Kane killed the game with 10 minutes to play, giving England a morale boost to round off the international break.
