Manchester United fans reckon Erik ten Hag is conducting a ‘social experiment’ following the club’s latest bizarre transfer link.

A number of surprising names have either been linked or actually signed during the Dutchman’s reign at Old Trafford. Wout Weghorst spent the second half of last season at the club on loan from Burnley, while Sergio Reguilon recently arrived on a season-long deal from Tottenham.

Meanwhile, Jonny Evans, fresh from being relegated with Leicester City, has rejoined the club on a one-year contract. One year ago, Ten Hag was keen on signing former West Ham and Stoke striker Marko Arnautovic, only for United to back out of the transfer, having had a bid of £7.6million rejected by Italian side Bologna.

Now, in perhaps the most surprising transfer link yet, United were said to be keen on former Aston Villa and Everton winger Anwar El Ghazi, now a free agent after leaving PSV Eindhoven by mutual consent earlier this month.

Ten Hag currently has issues with several wingers at the club. The Dutchman has had a bust-up with Jadon Sancho, who is expected to leave when the transfer window reopens in January, while Antony has been placed on a leave of absence amid allegations of violence against women.

The Daily Mail claimed United chiefs could address the issue by snapping up El Ghazi and were said to be weighing up a move for him. Subsequent reports say United have decided against signing El Ghazi.

However, the fact the club were said to be interested in a player who managed just 11 minutes in a struggling Everton side during a loan spell in the second half of the 2021/22 season has upset some supporters.

One raged: "Yeah, get Ten Hag out of this club immediately. He’s using us as a social experiment.”
