Romelu Lukaku played a big part in Chelsea missing out on the signing of Jeremy Doku earlier in his career. Anderlecht academy boss Jean Kindermans has revealed that the striker personally advised the winger to stay put and reject interest from the likes of the Blues.

Like Lukaku, Doku came through the ranks at Anderlecht. Lukaku is the oldest of the two by nine years so their paths initially did not cross.

However, he has since had an impact on his career path. When Doku was just 15, he received interest from top clubs in Europe.

Chelsea were one of them and Anderlecht were finding it hard to keep hold of their best talent. But that is where Lukaku stepped in.

Doku went on to make his senior debut a year later at the age of 16 and made 37 appearances for the Belgian club before joining Rennes in 2020.

Kindermans told last weekend’s edition of the Sunday Mirror: “I remember taking Romelu into my office about the problem of getting young players to commit to us – Doku in particular. Romelu replied, ‘Come on, pass your phone to me, I’m going to call him’.

“But I didn’t want to do that because a phone call gets quickly forgotten. So, instead, I got Romelu to convince Jeremy to stay. I still have the video on my phone.

“On it, you can hear Romelu giving advice to the Doku family, saying ‘Hey, guys, stay with Anderlecht for a while, you’re good’ and so on.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. He has been tasked with replacing Riyad Mahrez, who moved to the Saudi Pro League in the same window.

Doku made his debut in the 5-1 win over Fulham and is determined to take his chance at the treble winners. He told City’s website: “I am a young player with so much learning and improving to do. Working with Pep [Guardiola] and his staff, and playing alongside these work-class players, will make me a much better player. I feel sure of that.

“Watching City last season was amazing. To win the treble is the hardest thing in football and they did it. You cannot imagine how exciting it is to be joining this team.”
