After throwing everybody in Broncos Country except Miles the Mascot under the bus and seizing control of a $4.65 billion NFL franchise like he owns it, irascible Sean Payton has no choice but to get this retooled orange-and-blue bandwagon rolling in high gear right out of the gates.

Coach Crabbypants won’t be granted a second chance to make a big first impression.

Beating da hated Rai-duhs in his debut as Broncos coach is nothing less than a must-win game for Payton.

Things have changed around here and Payton has all the answers?

Well, prove it, Coach.

Not next month. Immediately. On Sunday. Against Las Vegas.

“Obviously,” Payton said, “you want to play well. It’s a home game. It’s a division game. It’s our first game.”

I expect the Broncos to not only end their six-game losing streak to the Raiders, but beat Vegas so badly that little Josh McDaniels suffers five-day bruises to his ego.

Like Payton, my expectation is for this Denver team to make the playoffs.

But no matter how I do the math, it’s hard to figure out how the Broncos get to 10 victories without beating the Raiders in the season-opener.

Payton has portrayed himself as nothing less than the smartest man in every room at Broncos headquarters, now infused with so much lemon juice by the new, demanding boss that folks walk around puckered.

As you might have heard, Payton has told Russell Wilson, his brand-obsessed quarterback, to quit kissing babies. He trashed our old clueless pal Nathaniel Hackett for one of the worst coaching jobs in NFL history. He even tried to pin some of the recent on-field woes of a last-place team on new club president Damani Leech, who hasn’t done anything to anybody except give us some groovy new snowcapped helmets.

Payton’s harsh truths are hung out on the line for all to see, like dirty laundry.

While I have immense respect for the success Payton enjoyed in New Orleans, and firmly believe adding his no-nonsense, old-school approach to football was the right move for a team that hasn’t qualified for the playoffs in the NFL lifetime of safety Justin Simmons, I also admit to wondering:

In the difficult and righteous task of changing the culture of a losing football team, might Payton be a little more discreet in choosing his battles, rather than picking a fight with every guy in the bar?

When Deion Sanders calls out non-believers in his CU program, he does it with a wink and a grin, not to be taken more seriously than trash talk among guys hanging at the barbershop.

Payton will clash with anyone about anything, whether it’s his distaste for perceived bias against him by league honchos, or his displeasure when he spies media wretches standing too close to the locker room as players leave the field after a game. While that might make for fascinating theater, it all plays out a little like a Shakespearian tragedy.

So much drama.

And all that drama is going to wear folks out real quick if the Broncos don’t win. If this team can’t fulfill Payton’s lofty expectations, the Denver locker room will be a brotherhood of the miserable.

Payton recites the checklist of things that could keep him awake at night in the week prior to his regular-season debut on the Denver sideline: New coaches. New players. A whole new way of doing things.

Anything close to football perfection is nearly unattainable in the opening four weeks of any NFL season, when it’s a mad dash to work out the kinks without getting beat up on the scoreboard.

“It’s not uncommon when the season starts, you’re anxious to see what you have,” said Payton, a perfectionist who sweats all the small stuff.

I’m just a knucklehead keeping score.

Show us what you’ve got, Mr. Payton.

You’re the answer man.
