Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been given a one match ban and fined £100,000 after admitting to having acted in an improper manner following his sending off against Newcastle.

Van Dijk had been charged by the FA following the sending off, with it being alleged the Dutch defender had used "abusive and/or insulting words" to referee John Brooks after being dismissed.

The Liverpool captain was sent off against Newcastle in the 29th minute last month after fouling striker Alexander Isak on the edge of the Reds box.

However, after Brooks brandished the red card, the 32-year-old refused to leave the pitch, instead giving him a piece of his mind. Van Dijk also appeared to argue with fourth official Stuart Attwell too before making his way down the tunnel at St. James'. He has now accepted the charge of improper conduct.

Thankfully for van Dijk, his dismissal at St. James' didn't prevent Liverpool from producing a stunning come from behind win against Newcastle, with Darwin Nunez coming off the bench to fire home two late strikes past Nick Pope to give the Reds all three points on Tyneside.

Last weekend, van Dijk missed Liverpool's rampant 3-0 win over Aston Villa, with the Reds dismantling Unai Emery's side at Anfield in impressive fashion.

While he is currently away on international duty with the Netherlands, van Dijk will now also miss Liverpool's return to action in the Premier League next Saturday on September 16, which sees Jurgen Klopp and co travel to Molyneux to take on Wolves.

It had been feared that the Dutchman's ban could have been even longer, especially after the audio of his furious rant at Brooks was released. The Liverpool star remained on the pitch following his sending off against the Magpies while a VAR check was conducted, calling Brooks' decision a "f***ing joke".

And after having reflected on his red card, van Dijk admits that the incident which has seen him handed a one match ban was out of character.

"That was not typical for me but that was the red card anyway," said van Dijk while away on international duty. "I've never got one before at Liverpool, and I think only about four times in my entire career. But apart from that I still started the season well.

"I feel good and strong. I think it went well against Chelsea and Bournemouth. Despite the red card, the start was fine. I cannot wait to return.”
