Paul Scholes can’t answer the question over if he was better than Steven Gerrard, admitting that it relies upon the nature of their two teams at the time.<\/p>\n
Football fans continue to argue about the merits of Scholes’ success at Manchester United with Gerrard’s dominant spell in the centre of the park for Liverpool.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And Scholes, who made more than 700 appearances for the Red Devils across twenty years, believes that the set-ups of both sides was critical in differentiating the pair of them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Scholes was asked on\u00a0Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE if he was a better player than the Liverpool legend, and the 48-year-old replied: ‘I can\u2019t answer that. Gerrard. Gerrard\u2019s a great player\u2026<\/p>\n
‘We\u2019re different, we\u2019re very different\u2026 he\u2019s an athlete.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Football fans continue to debate whether Paul Scholes (L) was better than Steven Gerrard<\/p>\n

Scholes could not answer the debate, noting the differences between their respective sides<\/p>\n
‘I think he\u2019s more of a match winner. But, he was playing in a team where he probably had to be. I was more part of a team. He was more individual I think.’<\/p>\n
When pressed on how they would have fared if the situation was flipped, Scholes said it was ‘very different again’, and that they might not have had the same successes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Scholes said: ‘I wouldn\u2019t be able to do what he did at Liverpool.<\/p>\n
‘Whether he could\u2019ve done it at United, I don\u2019t know. I don\u2019t see why not. But I couldn\u2019t have done what he did at Liverpool, no.’<\/p>\n
The debate between Scholes and Gerrard remains hotly contested, despite the decade that has transpired since their playing days.<\/p>\n
Last month, Ben Foster ranked Scholes as the best midfielder in the Premier League era, listing Steven Gerrard back in fourth place behind Kevin De Bruyne and Frank Lampard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Scholes hailed the work of the team at Manchester United, while Gerrard was an individual<\/p>\n

Gerrard played over 700 games for Liverpool between 1998 and 2015 before joining LA Galaxy<\/p>\n
But in May, Gerrard’s former Liverpool colleague Jamie Carragher stuck up for his former teammate, highlighting that Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign Gerrard for Man United, while Jose Mourinho attempted to bring him to Chelsea.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Since retiring from playing in 2013, Scholes joined up with several of his former Man United teammates to own Salford City, who currently compete in League Two.<\/p>\n
Gerrard, who made over 700 appearances for Liverpool between 1998 and 2015, joined LA Galaxy before retiring from the game in 2016.<\/p>\n
The former Rangers and Aston Villa boss is currently in the early stages of his first season in charge of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
