Four-time World Cup-winners Germany have been far from their synergised selves in recent years – so Hansi Flick thought some outside-the-box thinking was needed prior to last year's contest in Qatar.

Leading up his first major tournament at the helm of Die Mannschaft, the national team had fallen at the first stage of a World Cup for the first time in 80 years. Euro 2020 also saw them failed to reach the last eight of the continental competition for the first time in four editions of the tournament, signalling Germany was in dire need of change.

So former Bayern Munich boss Flick looked to the skies for inspiration as to why they were no longer running like the well-oiled machine of old. And naturally, he landed on geese as the answer to his dilemma.

That's among the more surprising revelations made in the upcoming All or Nothing docuseries centred around Germany's efforts at last year's World Cup. The show – which will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from Friday – brings behind-the-scenes footage from Qatar and Germany's build-up to the competition, bird presentations and all.

The second episode shows the European giants – who last won the World Cup in 2014 but have endured a drastic decline of late – holding a team talk in a cosy conference space ahead of their opening group game against Japan. And Flick directed the squad's attention to a projector screen, which showed a short film explaining the might of the modest goose, who may be meek alone but is stronger than the sum of its parts when working as one.

It's a fine metaphor in essence, though one might expect it to be mentioned in passing, rather than having an entire viewing session dedicated to the billed beasties. And the disinterested reactions of some players appeared to indicate they were in agreement.

The camera pans to Borussia Dortmund centre-back Niklas Sule looking particularly fed up with the presentation, which was titled 'World Cup 2022: Our Big Flight'. Antonio Rudiger is also seen with a vacant-looking stare on his face, while Youssoufa Moukoko appeared to be struggling to hold his head up out of boredom.

The manager said after his presentation: "Greylag geese don't really have anything to do with us. But they've achieved a system that allows them to achieve something amazing. They manage, when everyone follows the rules, to extend their flight range by more than 70%."

Or perhaps the players simply didn't buy into Flick's methods, conceding two late goals to suffer a shock 2-1 defeat to Japan in their first group outing.

Die Mannschaft eventually went on to draw against Spain before beating Costa Rica 4-2, but a single win wasn't enough to prevent another group exit. As a result, they were left flying home early while Lionel Messi's Argentina went on to be crowned world champions.

Fortunately for them, Germany will host Euro 2024 next year and thus don't have the added pressure of qualifying on their plates. They could use all the help they can get after failing to record a win in their last four games, suggesting Flick may be better off just fielding a gaggle instead.
