Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has revealed that an ex-Brighton teammate of his and former Liverpool star convinced him to sign a new contract and remain at Stamford Bridge under Mauricio Pochettino.

The 20-year-old signed a six-year deal at Chelsea this summer, putting the end to speculation surrounding his future.

Colwill enjoyed a successful loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion last season, and he revealed that it was during this time that a teammate of his convinced him to remain at Chelsea.

The defender admitted that his teammate became an influential figure on him during his time at the AmEx and gave him advice on his future.

While Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Colwill, it was the advice from his Brighton colleague, and ex-Liverpool player, that swayed him into staying at Chelsea.

Speaking to the press ahead of his potential England debut, Colwill revealed that Adam Lallana gave a glowing review of new Chelsea manager Pochettino.

The pair worked together during their time at Southampton, and Lallana was on hand to ease any concerns that Colwill may have had.

‘I have had conversations with Adam,’ revealed Colwill.

‘He told me about how much of a good guy he (Pochettino) was and he thinks he is a really good manager and I took that on board when I was making my decision.’

The defender was not disappointed when he finally met his new boss as he said: ‘When I finally met him (Pochettino), I realised everything Adam said was true.

‘That’s a big difference, him showing that there are two sides whereas the majority of managers may just look at you like a footballer, which he doesn’t. That helps me play my best football. I know I’m going to improve. I can guarantee that. He’s such a good manager and he will push me, he won’t let me have any off-days, that’s what I need.

‘Someone like me, if someone lets me go to sleep, I might just have a good day or a bad day. I need someone there to give me that kick up bum and say ‘keep going’. That’s what he does.’

Colwill will be hoping that he can impress while on England duty and return to Stamford Bridge and get back to winning ways after the Blues fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Notitngham Forest last time out.
