Marketa Vondrousova was caught crying in the cool-down room after surviving a scare in her singles match against Peyton Stearns. The world No 9 was struggling with an injury during her three-set win on Monday. And she subsequently pulled out of the women’s doubles with Barbora Strycova, who is playing the final tournament of her career before retiring.

There was concern during Vondrousova’s singles match against Stearns when she started holding her back and shoulder after losing the first set. The 24-year-old was close to tears as she took some tablets at 3-2 in the second set but they seemed to do the trick as she came back to win 6-7(3) 6-3 6-2.

The Czech star still isn’t out of the clear with the injury concern, however, she was spotted icing her elbow in the cool-down area after her match. And cameras caught Vondrousova crying in the arms of her doubles partner Strycova. Less than two hours later, they had withdrawn from the women’s doubles event.

It will come as an extra blow given the fact that 37-year-old Strycova previously stated that the US Open would be the final tournament of her career. The pair were set to take on 16th seeds Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski later on Monday.

A former world No 1 in doubles, Strycova is still in the mixed draw with Santiago Gonzalez and the pair will contest their quarter-final match on Tuesday. The 37-year-old previously retired in 2021 but left the door open for a potential return at Wimbledon in 2022.

While she didn’t end up heading to SW19 last summer, the Czech player did make a comeback this year in Madrid. Pairing back up with old partner Hsieh Su-Wei, the duo won their second Wimbledon crown this year while Vondrousova won the women’s singles title.

But Strycova has since been adamant that the US Open would be her final tournament. “I wanted her to play Billie Jean King Cup, and she was like, ‘No,'” Vondrousova previously told Tennis.com after the pair linked up for Strycova’s farewell in Flushing Meadows.
