Several Chelsea players were left in despair after their 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest. As the final whistle sounded to mark the Blues’ second defeat of the season Raheem Sterling, Ian Maatsen, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke fell to their knees, utterly dejected.

Sterling was outstanding last time out as he carried Chelsea to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Premier League new boys Luton Town but at the weekend he was unable to inspire the same outcome. The Englishman was one of the best players on the pitch once again though with 45.5 per cent of the attacks coming down his right flank.

As they chased the game he was switched to the left wing and then striker but wastefulness in front of goal meant Anthony Elanga’s 48th-minute strike was enough to see out the game for the visitors. Sterling was one of four players who fell to their knees as their disappointment stood out amongst the other Chelsea players.

In the immediate aftermath, Mauricio Pochettino, a picture of frustration, gave his reaction to the defeat. “In this type of game, I think it would help us to be more mature and to feel the competition. It is not enough to have quality but you need to compete in a different way to match their aggressivity, energy and desire,” he told assembled media.

“They didn’t create many chances. We conceded because of our mistake. Disappointed because it was a game that should be a win but we need to be more clinical in front of the goal. We didn’t score and that is why we didn’t win.”

“We are disappointed because we did everything to try and get a different result,” added Pochettino. “But football is about not making mistakes and we made one mistake and paid for that.”

We are unlucky because I think we deserved more. But I have said before, it is only a matter of time.”

Chelsea now find themselves in 11th place in the Premier League table with one win, one draw and two losses after four games. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest jumped two places above them in the standings following back-to-back losses to Manchester United in the league and Burnley in the EFL Cup.
