{"id":291092,"date":"2023-09-03T23:07:08","date_gmt":"2023-09-03T23:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=291092"},"modified":"2023-09-03T23:07:08","modified_gmt":"2023-09-03T23:07:08","slug":"gauff-rolls-into-quarterfinals-by-halting-wozniackis-comeback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/tennis\/gauff-rolls-into-quarterfinals-by-halting-wozniackis-comeback\/","title":{"rendered":"Gauff rolls into quarterfinals by halting Wozniacki&apos;s comeback"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>US Open: Coco Gauff books her spot in the quarterfinals by halting Caroline Wozniacki&#8217;s comeback<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Coco Gauff beat Caroline Wozniacki\u00a06-3 3-6 6-1 to reach the US Open quarters\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><b>Wozniacki, a 33-year-old mother of two, came out of retirement in June<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>DailyMail.com provides all the latest international sports news<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Home favorite Coco Gauff\u00a0rolled into the US Open quarterfinals Sunday in a three-set win over Caroline Wozniacki.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gauff became the first American teenager since Serena Williams more than two decades ago to reach the US Open quarterfinals in consecutive years<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old halted\u00a0Wozniacki&#8217;s comeback trail at Flushing Meadows, knocking out the 33-year-old with a 6-3 3-6 6-1 victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Dane, a mother of two, was playing in her first tournament since coming out of retirement in June, making an inspiring run to the fourth round at the US Open to meet Gauff for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Gauff asked one of her coaches, Brad Gilbert, to stop talking to her as the second set slipped away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/03\/22\/75019619-12476591-image-a-19_1693777796556.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Coco Gauff rolled into the US Open quarterfinals in a three-set win over Caroline Wozniacki<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/03\/22\/75019881-12476591-image-a-22_1693777852687.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Wozniacki, a 33-year-old mother of two, announced she was coming out of retirement in June<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/03\/22\/75019875-12476591-image-a-21_1693777849110.jpg\" height=\"417\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>19-year-old Gauff halted Wozniacki&#8217;s comeback trail at Flushing Meadows winning\u00a06-3 3-6 6-1<\/p>\n<p>Throughout Gauff&#8217;s intense battle with Wozniacki, Gilbert was continuously chirpping advice at his teen player even when she was on the other side of the court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After dropping her serve to go 5-3 down in the second set, Gauff turned to her box and firmly uttered to Gilbert, &#8216;Please just stop.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>But her silencing of her coach appeared to work as she wound up winning the last six games.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gauff kept missing the mark in the second set, to the tune of 22 unforced errors, but she cleaned that up considerably down the stretch, with just eight miscues in the last set.<\/p>\n<p>Gauff, whose best showing at a major was reaching the final at the 2022 French Open, has now won 15 of her past 16 matches.
