Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Liverpool should make a £150m move for Bukayo Saka in January if they cash in on Mohamed Salah this summer. Al-Ittihad are said to be preparing a £200m bid for the Egyptian superstar as they look to test the Reds’ resolve.

Liverpool insist their star winger is not for sale and pushed back a £150m bid from the reigning Saudi Pro League champions on Friday. Despite England’s transfer window slamming shut last night, Saudi Arabian clubs still have five days to do business, and so Al-Ittihad are expected to go back in with an improved offer.

With no like-for-like replacements in their ranks, it seems unlikely Liverpool will entertain Al-Ittihad’s proposals but if they do then Merson thinks they should use the money from the transfer to pick up PFA Younger Player of the Year Saka in January.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, he said: “Do they sell him [Salah] for £200m and then in January see if they can get Saka from Arsenal for 150?

“I’m thinking right one person’s 31 if I can get £200m, who is the next one in line? The next big thing on the right wing… It’s Saka. He’s the best right winger about after Salah.

“If you were Liverpool, you are trading in someone who is a little bit older for someone who is younger, I mean they could go and rock the boat with Arsenal and say ‘here’s 150 for someone’.”

More info

The idea that Liverpool could sign Arsenal’s best player smack-bang in the middle of the Premier League season seems very idealistic. It would undoubtedly be a good bit of business if they could pull it off but the likelihood of Arsenal selling Saka to one of their closest rivals is next to nothing.

Especially given the fact that Saka recently put pen to paper on a fresh four-year deal at the club. Arsenal have never been a selling club and regularly run down their star players’ deals before letting them go elsewhere, for better or worse.

Kylian Mbappe was also mentioned as a possible replacement during the debate but his astronomical wages may be a problem for Liverpool, who tend to try and keep their wage bill down. The Frenchman currently earns £1.1m a week while Salah, Liverpool’s highest-paid player, is on a fraction of that, raking in around £350,000 every seven days.
