Ange Postecoglou has not done a lot wrong in 85 days as Tottenham boss. He has spoken honestly and sensibly in public, dealt skilfully with Harry Kane’s exit and quickly assembled a team to restore the club’s identity as flag bearers for attacking flair.

This, crucially, while making a strong start to the Premier League campaign left supporters thrilled to have a man in charge once again who understood Spurs but nine changes at Fulham, going out of the Carabao Cup before the end of August as if it doesn’t matter, is not a good look.

Turns out Postecoglou is not the last of the romantics. He is a pragmatist like all the others, aware that, ultimately, Daniel Levy will judge him by where he finishes in the league because that’s what brings in money and international prestige. Top four, success. Back into Europe, an improvement. Anything else, tut-tut.

He could have picked a recognisable first team and still lost at Fulham. It was a tough draw not AFC Wimbledon at home, but perception is key.

Make four or five changes and it still looks as if you want a good crack at the season’s most winnable cup competition, the only one left behind for the others last time by Manchester City. Make nine and it looks suspiciously like you’re really not too fussed.

Ange Postecoglou has enjoyed a strong start to life as the new Tottenham manager

Postecoglou suffered his first defeat as Tottenham crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Monday

It is the first slight misstep by Postecoglou at Tottenham. One he will overcome if everything else goes to plan. One that will only come back to haunt him if not.

It happened to Antonio Conte. In the eyes of supporters, resting Harry Kane and losing an FA Cup tie at Sheffield United was worse than a public character assassination of his players after a draw at Southampton.

Postecoglou said his selection at Fulham was all about seeing other players in action. He called it the “discovery stage”.

Besides, we are all conditioned these days to appreciate the players hauled around the world for preseason friendlies when they should be working on fitness cannot be expected to play three times in a week, even at this stage of proceedings.

Postecoglou (middle) won’t mind dropping out of the Carabao Cup if Spurs secure top four football

With no Europe, Spurs now face a maximum 47 games this season, a sum total which requires them to reach the FA Cup final after winning replays in the third and fourth round.

He rejected the idea the Carabao Cup was low on the priority list but if ending the Tottenham’s longest post-war trophy drought is a matter of urgency and he desperately needed to see more of the fringe players he works with every day, he could have picked them at Bournemouth or Burnley in the Premier League.

A draw either of those games is not terminal. You get a point and it might come in handy in the inglorious quest to overcome Brighton or Aston Villa and finish higher than eighth, instead of the peril of a penalty shootout.

Nobody does that though, do they? It would be pure madness so Postecoglou played his first team at Bournemouth and will play them at Burnley on Saturday. Dress it up how you want but finishing a bit higher up in the Premier League matters more to clubs than anything that happens in the Carabao Cup.
