Conor McGregor confirms ‘rematch’ plan ahead of UFC return in 2024
Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has sent fans into a frenzy after declaring for a second time that he will fight Nate Diaz before he retires. The Irishman made the latest declaration via his X social media account during an exchange with the American ex-UFC star.
Both fighters have put on two momentous bouts over the years, with the first fight coming back in 2016 at UFC 196. The bout saw McGregor suffer the first defeat of his career after submitting to Diaz’s rear naked choke in the second round.
The pair stepped into the Octagon again just six months later at UFC 202, which went the full three rounds. McGregor ended up victorious via a majority decision in one of the sport’s most entertaining spectacles.
And it now seems that the pair are set to complete their trilogy of fights in their latest altercation on social media. Referring to their second fight, McGregor posted on X to claim that the win was “a cake walk on points.”
Diaz snapped back saying: “When I killed you off I should’ve never gave you a rematch I never get a rematch especially when I don’t really lose like n our 2nd fight or my last fight I just let u p**** run off into sunset like you won .. Live with it ur both p*****”
Not one to shy away from a challenge, McGregor quickly responded: “You’ll get your rematch, lad.”
McGregor’s response comes off the back of an interview with TalkSport where he set out his fighting schedule. “[Michael] Chandler, I have to do it,” McGregor said after Anthony Joshua’s latest win over Robert Helenius in August. The fight against Chandler is mandatory with the pair taking part in the latest series of The Ultimate Fighter.

“I’ve just got to do that [smack] him,” McGregor added. “I’m gonna grab him by the chest [and smack him]. That’s what I’ve got to do. Chandler next in December and then Gaethje, BMF, and then we’ll do the Nate trilogy.”
Whoever McGregor decides to face next will be his first opponent since his trilogy defeat to Dustin Poirier back in 2021. The Irishman lost the fight via technical knockout in the second round and suffered a broken tibia in the process.
The fight for Diaz will be his first since suffering a defeat to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in his debut boxing bout in August.
