5 potential opponents Conor McGregor could fight next after Dustin Poirier loss

Dustin 'the Diamond' Poirier was able to beat Conor McGregor in the first round, again, via TKO when the bout was stopped due to a sickening broken leg for the Notorious One.

The bout was the completion of their trilogy, and after McGregor dropped his opponent with a punch at UFC 178, way back in 2014, Poirier has since avenged the loss: twice.

And, with McGregor preparing for a spell on the sidelines to nurse his broken leg, fans are predicting who he could square off with in his comeback bout.

And Daily Star Sport has a look at some of his options.

Dustin Poirier

The pair concluded their trilogy saga at UFC 246 last Sunday, and with Poirier now 2-1 up in their series, the Notorious One will be desperate to be even up the score.

UFC president, Dana White, revealed that there will be a fourth instalment of the bout once McGregor is healed.

"It sucks, it’s brutal and it’s not the way you want to see fights end," White said after the bout.

"Dustin Poirier will fight for the title and when Conor is healed and ready to go, we’ll do the rematch."

Jake Paul

Jake and Logan Paul's excursion into combat sports – following Logan's exhibition bout with Floyd 'Money' Mayweather last month – could continue with Jake squaring off with McGregor inside the octagon.

Paul was quick to troll McGregor via Twitter after his loss to Poirier; in a series of tweets, he said: "SLEEPY MCGREGOR !!" and then followed that up with "My new offer for Conor McGregor is $23 dollars."

He found himself at the centre of his brother's bout with Mayweather.

And he got on the wrong side of the unblemished boxer when he stole his hat at a press conference, and began to mock Mayweather on social media.

McGregor and Nate Diaz are currently tied at 1-1 in bouts, and Diaz was quick to offer McGregor a fight before his return to the octagon.

When asked about the potential of the two meeting again, Diaz told The Schmo: "Yeah. Time will tell. We'll see."

Whilst McGregor was also keen to meet his old adversary inside of the cage again: "It’s for sure going to happen.

"It must happen. We’re 1-1. It must happen. It will happen. I look forward to the day."

Rafael Dos Anjos

The Brazilian, Rafael Dos Anjos, was meant to square off with McGregor in the main event of UFC 196, however, Dos Anjos injured his foot in the run-in to the bout.

McGregor mocked Dos Anjos' injury, and the pair have yet to meet inside of the cage again, but the Brazilian wants the fight and he's confident he would win.

"Conor, he looked so sloppy, he looked so small. I met him at the weigh-in day and we had a small altercation in the back room and he looks so small.

"He looks like a little boy. I would smash that guy," he concluded.

Wheelchair Boxing

McGregor had to be stretchered out of his bout with Poirier, and he snapped his tibia bone during his clash.

However, the Irishman isn't too keen on spending too long away from the sport, and he opened up to the possibility of wheelchair boxing.

"But anyway in the heat of all this he just turned and went, 'You know, I'm gonna do the wheelchair boxing fight now'," said McGregor's trainer John Kavanagh.

"Because, he's off his feet for a while. He made a joke about that."
