Roger Federer’s first tennis interview led to amusing mix-up
Kate Middleton plays tennis with Roger Federer at Wimbledon
Roger Federer is one of the greatest tennis players to ever walk the earth, having won an incredible 20 Grand Slam titles during his illustrious playing career. But his first public interview as a teenager led to a hilarious mix-up – until his mum intervened.
In the book Strokes of Genius, which focuses on Federer’s 2008 Wimbledon final showdown with Rafael Nadal, the story of the interview comes to light.
Federer’s talents as a teenager led to him being interviewed by his local newspaper and, during the conversation, he was asked what he would spend his first tennis paycheck on. Federer apparently said that he would spend the money on a Mercedes, which didn’t go down well with his mother Lynette.
Federer’s mum then asked the reporter if she could listen to the recording of the interview. And she soon realised that her son had in fact said he would spend his first paycheck on “mehr CDs”. Federer merely wanted to buy “more CDs” and had never said he would buy a Mercedes after all.

Following the amusing incident, Federer went on to win his first Grand Slam title at the age of 19 when he defeated Mark Philippoussis in the 2003 Wimbledon final. The Swiss then dominated tennis for years and lifted 16 Grand Slam trophies in 27 attempts between the summer of 2003 and the start of 2010.
His superiority was finally ended by Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as the now 42-year-old started falling short in the semi-finals and finals of major tournaments. But Federer still managed to get his hands on another four Grand Slams before calling time on his career in September 2022 at the Laver Cup in London.

Lynette Federer was often spotted at tournaments supporting her son, who won his final Grand Slam in 2018 at the Australian Open. And just before the blockbuster star’s 40th birthday in 2021, she told Blick magazine: “Roger has always been a fun, active guy who had lots of friends around him. It was immediately evident that he wanted to play sports.
“It didn’t matter who he was. Skateboarding, biking, ping pong or squash, he just liked to move. It was not an obligation for him unlike many other children, he did it with pleasure.
“People have always been amazed by his exceptional talent and naturalness with which he hit the ball from a very young age. However, we never imagined such a success.”
