Yusuf Demir ‘has returned to Rapid Vienna after his Barcelona loan was CANCELLED… with winger dropped by Xavi so that Catalan giants could avoid £8.3m mandatory buy option and help club register Ferran Torres’
- Yusuf Demir only joined Barcelona on loan from Rapid Vienna last summer
- The season-long agreement included a fixed option to buy for £8.3million
- But Xavi reportedly did not see the Austria international as part of club’s future
- They would have been obligated to pay fee had Demir played another game
Yusuf Demir has returned to parent club Rapid Vienna after Barcelona cancelled his loan deal, according to reports in Spain.
The Austrian winger joined the Catalan giants on a season-long loan deal in July last year with the option of making the move permanent for a fixed £8.3million (€10m) fee.
That mandatory purchase option would have kicked in – according to MARCA – had the Austria international played one more game for Barcelona.

However, Diario Sport claim Xavi did not see the 18-year-old forming part of the club’s future, and therefore report he has left Barcelona after featuring in nine games for the Catalan side.
The report comes after MARCA reported Demir had been demoted to the Barcelona B and stripped of his No 11 first-team number.
The £8.3m saved also helped contribute to Barcelona’s ability to finally register Ferran Torres, who joined from Manchester City earlier this month.

Demir performed well during pre-season but failed to make the most of his early promise during the early part of the LaLiga season, failing to record a goal or assist in any of his six league games or three Champions League matches.
The move however continues the clear-out of deadwood in the Barcelona squad, with Philippe Coutinho having joined Aston Villa on loan with a £33m buy option included.
MARCA claim the club are also working on the exit of centre-back Samuel Umtiti, who only signed a new contract at the club earlier this week until 2026 with a pay-cut included.
The report also adds right-back Sergino Dest and forward Luuk de Jong are also surplus to requirement and available for transfer this month.
