‘World’s best’ striker Kerr stars for Chelsea

Sam Kerr has been hailed the best female striker in the world after playing a starring role in Chelsea’s Champions League defeat of German club Wolfsburg.

The Matildas captain scored a brilliant goal and won a first-half penalty that led to another goal in Chelsea’s 3-0 quarter-final second-leg win, which secured the English Women’s Super League champions a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Karen Carney, a great of English women’s football and a former Chelsea star, told BT Sport that Kerr “is the best” when asked if the 27-year-old Australia forward was among the top strikers worldwide in the women’s game.

“Her movement is exceptional, the way she peels off, finds space,” said Carney, who added it was always going to take some time for Kerr to stand out in top-level European football.

“It didn’t work for her at the start of the season but people have got to understand the pressure, the expectation she faced, going into Chelsea with a big name on your jersey.

“She’s outstanding.”

Former Perth Glory star Kerr has now scored 20 goals this season for Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said her side’s win over Wolfsburg was her “favourite” victory since starting the job in 2012.

“I’ve waited nine years for today. That’s a long time for this moment,” Hayes said.
