VAR fears raised as chiefs ‘to hold meeting’ that may anger Mikel Arteta and co

FIFA bosses are set to discuss the possibility of extending VAR powers in a move that could anger Mikel Arteta and other Premier League managers, according to reports. The Arsenal boss has not shied away from criticising the system in recent weeks, most notably following Arsenal’s defeat at the hands of Newcastle earlier this month.

The use of VAR has sparked controversy ever since it was introduced in the Premier League four years ago, with the lengthy delays caused by reviews angering fans and pundits alike. Managers have also been left incensed at perceived injustices that VAR has failed to pick up over the course of its time in England’s top flight.

It seems as though a number of changes may soon be made to the way VAR works, although the proposed measures are likely to lead to further delays if they are implemented. FIFA chiefs will be asked to consider whether VAR’s powers should be extended to cover free kicks, corners and second yellow cards at an upcoming meeting, according to The Times.
