Van der Sar gives brutal response to Man Utd goalkeeper and wants chat with star
Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has given a brutal response to Altay Bayindir despite the Turkey star naming him as his favourite goalkeeper. The former Old Trafford favourite has offered to have a chat with Bayindir but insists he still prefers Andre Onana.
United had to strengthen their goalkeeper department in the summer following two major exits. David de Gea left at the end of his contract, while Dean Henderson completed a move to Crystal Palace.
Erik ten Hag knew Onana from his time at Ajax and brought him in for £47.2million in July. But there was still a need for another shot-stopper and Bayindir was identified and joined from Fenerbahce on deadline day for just £4.3m.
He is yet to play a single minute in a United shirt, with Ten Hag preferring to give Onana every chance to settle into life in England after a difficult start. But Bayindir has impressed in training and will be pushing for a debut in the coming weeks.

United interviewed Bayindir recently and posted a reel on Instagram of him revealing that Van der Sar was his favourite Red Devils goalkeeper of the past. The 25-year-old said: “My favourite goalkeeper for Manchester United when I was younger, I watched a lot of games of Manchester United, and my favourite goalkeeper, I say this and Edwin van der Sar is a legend, I know him.”
It didn’t take long for Van der Sar to reply to the video in the comment section. But the nature of his response was perhaps not expected.
The Dutchman, who won four Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, said he would be willing to speak to Bayindir but rather brutally stated he prefers Onana. Van der Sar wrote: “Hi Altay, will see you soon in Manchester and we will have a chat about goalkeeping but my favourite is still Andre as you will know!”

Bayindir will be doing all he can to change Van der Sar’s mind in the coming months. The Turkey international could be in line to feature in up to six games across January and February if Onana goes to the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon.
Onana came out of international retirement in September but is yet to decide whether he will go to AFCON. Ten Hag may be forced to call upon Bayindir but his recent comments suggest he won’t have a problem doing so.
Ten Hag said: “He makes a very good impression in training, he’s really developing, progressing. So we’re very happy with that and we are convinced we have the two right goalkeepers in our squad to do the job for us.”
