Stephan El Shaarawy investigated for ‘beating up thief trying to steal his car’

Roma forward Stephan El Shaarawy is reportedly under investigation for allegedly beating up a thief, who he spotted trying to steal his Lamborghini.

Italian outlet Corriere della Sera say that the former AC Milan player is being investigated for “causing serious injuries” to Jose Carlos Aliaga Sagardia, who attempted to steal the footballer’s vehicle.

The incident occurred back on February 12, when El Shaarawy paid a visit to fellow footballer friend Alessio Cerci.

The Roma man spotted Sagardia, a 30-year-old Chilean, attempting the theft, which is when he decided to intervene, according to Football Italia.

Sagardia was sentenced to prison for one and a half year for attempted theft, despite claiming he was beaten up by the player.

Two witnesses say differently, however, reporting that Sagardia kept punching himself in the face.

Prosecutor Carlo Villani has already indicted El Shaarawy, with his lawyer saying the investigation will be this month.

“The accused is a person who was stealing his car, he can say anything, but everything must be ascertained,” El Shaarawy’s lawyer said.

“Stephan will tell what happened when the interrogation is scheduled, which will certainly take place by the end of July.”

El Shaarawy only returned to Roma in January 2021 having previously played there between 2016 and 2019 – he has scored one goal in his second spell at the Stadio Olimpico and will play under Jose Mourinho next season.

Prior to Roma, he spent time at clubs like Genoa and Milan, where he rose to stardom.

After leaving Roma for the first time, he moved to China to play for Shanghai Shenua, but left about a year and a half later to return to Italy.

He also previously played for Italy, making 29 appearances for the national team since 2012, but wasn’t selected for the squad that was to play at Euro 2020 this year, despite playing in a friendly for them in March.
