Starlet who left Man Utd for free now worth £15m and stock continually rising

Angel Gomes was once touted as a wonderkid at Manchester United but, in 2020, he left with a whimper when he was let go on a free transfer.

Gomes gambled on himself and he moved abroad to France – where after a season on loan at Boavista, he has started to pull up trees for Lille. So much so, that he is now reported to be worth €18million (£15.9million)

Gomes told The Athletic: "That final year at United was one of the hardest things I’ve done in football. Not really being involved, not knowing what’s going to be next. Seeing people doing well, training every week, but not really having opportunities to play.

"When I say training, I mean having that high standard. But then come the end of the week and there’s nothing for that. So it feels like you’re just wasting time."

Gomes found his feet on loan in Portugal, and he admitted it helped him fall back in love with football again. And after returning to France, the youngster muscled his way into the first-team plans of Lille.

Gomes linked up with a Lille side that had shocked the French footballing landscape by pipping PSG to the post in the 2020/21 season. And while Lille haven't reached the same heights since, their young core of exciting players have continued to perform at the top level.

According to Transfermarkt, Gomes is now worth €18m. He added: "It’s a big gamble leaving United, leaving my home in Manchester, going into the unknown. I remember being home thinking, ‘There’s no going back. I’ve actually made this decision here'."

Gomes admitted he felt like he was taking a step backwards in the move, but it was one he was glad he took.

He added: "It’s gone better than I imagined it because of how down and negative I was at that time. But I’m just thankful to myself, really.

“It was a decision I chose to make. A very, very difficult decision. When I speak about it, no one understands how difficult it was."
