Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has believes the club's lack of transfer business means manager Jurgen Klopp "must feel he's got players coming through the system to fill the gaps".
The Reds have made just one signing this summer, bringing in Olympiacos left-back Kostas Tsimikas for £11.75m.
They have also been heavily linked with Timo Werner and Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara but Werner ended up joining Chelsea and the Reds seem reluctant to pay Bayern's £27m asking price for Thiago.
And Souness believes there is a reason behind Liverpool's reluctance to make signings, telling Sky Sports : "I think it's telling you something.
"I think Jurgen must feel he's got players coming through the system to fill the gaps when the current players get injured.
"Going back to my time as a player there, Liverpool always bought players when they were on top of the pile.
"You were buying players at that time where you don't know if they'll come in and be an instant hit.
"I think in recent history Fabinho and Andy Robertson were both that where they got them into the club, had a good look at what they had to offer, they fitted into the system nicely when they got introduced.

Liverpool's stance over Xherdan Shaqiri transfer and his 2020/21 chances
"So I think that would be a real vote of confidence to the young players at the football club if they don't buy.
"But I have a sneaky feeling that they may still have a go at someone."
Fellow Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes they will eventually fork out the money for Thiago, telling The Mirror : "The only worry that might put Liverpool off is Thiago’s age – but I think the signing will still happen.
"Liverpool have a few players in the squad around 28 or 29 and that’s why the deal will have to be on their terms – maybe nearer £20m.
"What Thiago does is add something different to what Liverpool have in midfield. The midfielders all do a brilliant job but are quite similar.
"It would be nice to have someone who can control the game more. It would be nice if they had a bit extra technically. I think a move will probably happen towards the end of the window."
