Solskjaer broke second Man Utd promise after Henderson due to Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘frustrated’ Man Utd squad as Mike Phelan lifts lid on ‘opinionated’ star

Dean Henderson fumed over broken promises before his Manchester United career staggered to an underwhelming demise this summer. And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left another of his players disappointed just months before United sacked him in November 2021, according to reports.

After joining Nottingham Forest on loan last year, Henderson aimed a rant toward United in frustration over being snubbed for the No 1 shirt.

Solskjaer allegedly told the England goalkeeper that he would succeed David de Gea in the 2021/22 season after becoming increasingly involved in the latter stages of the previous campaign.

But Henderson was struck with Covid shortly before the season started, allowing De Gea to retain his place as Solskjaer’s preferred option. And once Henderson returned, he didn’t get a look in.

Solskjaer is claimed to have left Jadon Sancho similarly disappointed after luring him to Old Trafford in a £73million deal from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021.

According to The Athletic, United promised Sancho the iconic No 7 shirt ahead of his highly-anticipated arrival, following years of strong links.

But when Cristiano Ronaldo made his shock return later in the same transfer window, the Old Trafford legend inherited his former shirt number from Edinson Cavani.

The report adds that Ronaldo continued to prove disruptive to Sancho’s start to life at United under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Sancho enjoyed his start to life under the German coach, scoring two goals in three games while playing as a right winger.

However, Ronaldo was discontent. The 38-year-old raised concerns over United’s playing style during a meeting between a group of players and Rangnick last February.

He allegedly requested that Rangnick switch his tactics from 4-3-3 to playing two strikers, which would see Sancho drop to the bench.

Rangnick rebuffed the demand, which may have contributed to Ronaldo’s scathing assessment of their working relationship on Piers Morgan Uncensored later in the year.

Being denied the No 7 shirt was only the start of an endless stream of issues for Sancho at United, ultimately leaving his Old Trafford future uncertain.

The 23-year-old has held showdown talks with Erik ten Hag this week ahead of club football’s return after effectively calling his boss a liar over his reasoning for excluding Sancho at Arsenal last time out.

He has since deleted the explosive statement from his X (formerly Twitter) profile, but it’s unclear whether he will return to the squad against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
