Ryan Reynolds Wrexham documentary accused of AI stunt by eagle-eyed fans

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary has been accused of using an AI-generated image. Eagle-eyed viewers claim the hit show, which is in its second season following the two actors turned-soccer-club-owners, used a confusing image of twelve men, believed to be Welsh labourers.

One of the main giveaways was a floating beer mug, with one of the men appearing to hold three jugs of drink. One of the drinks can be seen floating in the middle of his chest.

Another user on Reddit explained the best way to determine whether an image is AI-generated: Hands. “Then there’s the guy on the left with some wonky eyes and a peculiar unrealistic left hand, — hands are the best way to spot an AI-generated picture,” the Reddit user said. “And there is a man on the far right who looks like he’s straight out of a different era.”

The use of silver tankards also raised suspicion, as they were not typically owned or used by working-class individuals. It’s unclear what year back in time the picture is trying to recreate but Wrexham as a soccer club is one of the oldest in the world. It has a rich history dating back to 1864.

Reynolds and McElhenney have performed a miracle at the Welsh club, helping them climb back into the Football League for the first time in over a decade last season after winning the National League. “I’m not sure I can actually process what happened tonight, I’m still a little speechless,” Reynolds told reporters after the game. “One thing that’s running through my head over and over again was at the beginning, people said ‘Why Wrexham, why Wrexham’; this is exactly why Wrexham, what’s happening right now, is why.”

“I think we can hear how it feels to the town and that’s what’s most important for us – I think this is a moment of catharsis for them,” McElhenney said. “For us to be welcomed into their community and to be welcomed into this experience has been the moment of my life.”

Wrexham and last season’s main rivals for the league title, Notts County – who also eventually gained promotion – are going strong in League Two so far. Notts County are top of the standings after 12 games, while Wrexham are in seventh position which would give them a place in the end of season playoffs.

Wrexham are back in action on Saturday against Salford City. Like Wrexham, Salford City have a number high-profile owners, with former Manchester United players Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes joining Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham in owning a share of the club.
