Rotherham groundsman accused of ‘dragging water’ onto pitch as game is abandoned

Cardiff City fans have been left fuming after a Rotherham United groundsman was spotted dragging water back onto the pitch in their weekend Championship clash which was later abandoned due to poor conditions.

A torrential downpour saw the game abandoned shortly after half-time with Cardiff leading 1-0.

Heading into the contest, Cardiff were 19th in the Championship while Rotherham sat 21st, meaning a win could be crucial in both their fights for survival this term.

And after just five minutes, it was Cardiff who took the lead in the contest thanks to a goal from winger Jaden Philogene.

However, with the conditions on the pitch so bad, the game was eventually called off after the break.

But fans watching the game on iFollow spotted a Rotherham groundsman dragging water back onto the pitch, leading to conspiracy theories that the Millers wanted the game called off due to being down 1-0 to the Bluebirds.

Of course, this then sparked plenty of debate on social media, with some fans apoplectic with rage over the groundsman's actions.

One Cardiff fan tweeted directly at the EFL, writing: "1-0 up and they’re doing this to ensure it gets called off, sort it out" with another adding: "This individual needs to be sacked! @OfficialRUFC should be deducted points for failing to do their utmost to ensure the game is completed……. Shocking!"

However, there were some Rotherham fans who were left delighted by the water dragging.

"Doing a good job in my opinion," said one Rotherham fan, with another commenting "doing a fine job if you ask me."

The Daily Star have contacted Rotherham United for comment.
