Rooney comments on ‘new job’ after quitting DC United following MLS heartbreak

Wayne Rooney has quit DC United after failing to lead the club into the MLS play-offs.

The England legend has been in charge of DC for 15 months and while they ended their season with a 2-0 victory over New York City, they cannot reach the play-offs. The Washington side sit ninth in the 15-team league.

After the match, Rooney confirmed his departure, which will inevitably trigger speculation about a return to English management, having impressed during his time at crisis-hit Derby. The former Manchester United and Everton striker insists he has nothing lined up at the moment.

However, in his fairwell press conference, he did reveal he was "offered a job very close to my home in England four weeks ago". On the reasons for his departure, he explained: “I think it’s just the right time. I’ve done everything I can to try and get the club into the playoffs.

“It’s not been a single thing which has happened. It’s about timing in your career. I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I’ve had a lot of great help from the owners… I just feel like it’s the right time for me to back to England, first to obviously see my family. I haven’t seen them for a long time.

“And then, what lies ahead? Whether opportunities come up? I’ve seen a lot of reports in the media. I don’t have anything lined up. I’m going back there to see my family. If something comes up in October, November, of course I’ll look at it. But from my point of view, I’ve enjoyed my time here. It will help me a lot moving forward as a coach.”

Rooney has previously been linked with the manager’s role at Birmingham City, where NLF icon Tom Brady is a minority owner. Current manager John Eustace has been linked with Rangers, who recently sacked Michael Beale.

If Eustace was to leave St Andrew’s, Rooney would reportedly be a top target for the Blues’ new American owners.
