Ronaldo plummets from 1st to 27th on list of ‘world’s most marketable athletes’

Cristiano Ronaldo might be the highest paid footballer in the world, but his marketability is plummeting.

The Portugal superstar, who signed a mammoth £200million a year deal at Al-Nassr last year, was ranked the planet's most marketable athlete in 2022. But he's now dropped to no. 27 on the list, behind 12 other footballers.

The list, which is published by SportsPro and NorthStar Solutions Group, is based on individual brand strength, total addressable market (TAM) and general economics. Top of the rankings, annoyingly for Ronaldo, is his eternal rival Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to glory at the World Cup 10 months ago.

NBA duo Lebron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo made it into the top five, as did women's football stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe. Formula 1 aces Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen got into the top 10 while Lionesses Lucy Bronze and Leah Williams made the top 20.

Other footballers who are higher than Ronaldo on the list include PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe, Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, England pair Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, and Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies. Ronaldo was, however, deemed more marketable than Brazil icon Neymar, who joined him in Saudi Arabia this summer, and Manchester City goal monster Erling Haaland.
