Rodrigo de Paul admits Leeds transfer is close before deleting Twitter update

Rodrigo de Paul has admitted that a move to Leeds United is close – before deleting the update from Twitter.

The 26-year-old has been strongly linked with a switch to Elland Road following their promotion to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa has been desperate to bolster his squad with talents playing in Europe.

Rodrigo has already joined from Valencia, as has Robin Koch from SC Freiburg.

And the latest in the Argentine's sights in his compatriot De Paul – who is known for his goal-getting ability from midfield.

Leeds and Udinese have been locked in talks with the Serie A outfit determined to get the full £37m they have demanded.

Negotiations have been slow, though, and fears a deal would not be completed have grown.

Not least after it emerged that Russian club Zenit St Petersburg were also interested in the playmaker.

But De Paul has spoken out himself, on Twitter, indicating that his heart is set on a move to Yorkshire.

Leeds fanzine The Square Ball replied to a tweet insisting that the Argentina international is set on a move to Leeds and it is now up to the clubs to agree a fee.

And De Paul also replied, simply saying 'Yes' with a fingers crossed emoji before deleting the tweet shortly afterwards.

Whether a fee is agreed remains to be seen, with talks still ongoing.

But if the Sarandi-born star does join, it is very likely he would break the club-record fee – which stands at £26m after Leeds signed Rodrigo.

De Paul would become the club's seventh new signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Rodrigo, Koch, Sam Greenwood, Helder Costa, Illan Meslier and Jack Harrison.

Leeds are back in the Premier League after a 16-year absence and kicked off their campaign with a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in a frantic opener.

Harrison, Patrick Bamford and Mateusz Klich all got on the scoresheet but the Whites were downed by a Mohamed Salah hat-trick and a Virgil van Dijk header.

Leeds are back in action on Wednesday night when they face Hull City in the Carabao Cup.

They then face fellow Premier League newcomers Fulham three days later, who are reeling from their 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend.
