Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has been backed over his criticism of Red Devils forward Marcus Rashford. Ferdinand hit out at Rashford’s body language following the 1-0 Premier League loss to Wolves on Monday. The England international failed to make an impact as a second-half substitute at Old Trafford.

Rashford has scored just two Premier League goals so far this season.

The 24-year-old missed the start of the campaign due to a shoulder injury and has been unable to rediscover his best form under previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Ferdinand was not impressed with how Rashford portrayed himself in his 14-minute cameo against Wolves.

And former Tottenham striker Darren Bent agreed that Rashford, and a number of other United players, are not giving off an air of confidence like successful sides of the past.

“Rio Ferdinand’s got a point,” Bent said on talkSPORT.

“I can remember when you played Manchester United, certainly back when they were really successful, you used to stand in the tunnel and every single one of their players used to stand there with their chest out.

“They wanted to carry that burden of wearing the Manchester United shirt, wear it with pride.

“It’s almost like this Manchester United team are scared to wear the shirt and it’s even when they’re getting taken off for substitutions, it’s like they can’t get off the pitch quick enough.

“Even Marcus Rashford at the minute, it seems as though he’s got the world on his shoulders.

“Like he’s thinking about everything else other than football.

“At the minute for Manchester United, I’m not quite sure what direction they’re going in.”

Ferdinand took to YouTube to react to Monday’s dismal defeat.

But he didn’t want to only single out Rashford and said the whole performance was not good enough.

“Body language is an issue,” Ferdinand told Vibe With Five.

“Marcus Rashford comes off the bench and you are expecting him to go out there and really fly and give it some.

“And sometimes you see him losing the ball and the reaction to losing the ball isn’t what you want to see sometimes.

“That could be down to him not being happy, not playing etc. But you’ve got to put that to one side.

“When you’re out of the team it’s about coming in and proving to the manager what you’re about and who you are.

“Maybe he feels he is not getting the opportunities he deserves. I don’t know.

“It’s hard to pinpoint one player – you can’t, all the players have to take responsibility from Cristiano [Ronaldo] at the top all the way down to all the other players.”
