With Raphael Varane heading for a summer departure from Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane may not have to look too far to find a replacement for the Frenchman. Varane has emerged as one of the best defenders in the sport, but it set to be allowed to leave the Spanish capital as he enters the final year of his contract.
Manchester United and Chelsea are both interested in signing the World Cup winner, with both clubs targeting defenders in the summer transfer window.
That would appear to leave a huge hole in Madrid’s defence, though they appear to have a ready-made replacement at the club.
Both Varane and centre-back partner Sergio Ramos have spent several games out through injury and coronavirus in recent weeks.
Taking their place in Zidane’s backline has been Éder Militão, who became Madrid’s most expensive defender when they signed him from Porto in the summer of 2019.
JUST IN: Manchester United can sign Real Madrid star Varane for a bargain fee
Militao has found it hard to break past Ramos and Varane this season, either sitting on the bench or being ruled out injured.
But that has changed since the start of April, with the defender starting eight matches in succession for Los Blancos.
In that time, Madrid have gone unbeaten, winning four games, with one of them being a defeat of Barcelona in the latest El Clasico.
Zidane’s side have also kept five clean sheets with Militao in the side in recent weeks, conceding only three goals.

The Brazilian continued his impressive form in Madrid’s draw with Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.
Militao won two aerial duels and made seven tackles, as well as providing the assist for Karim Benzema’s equaliser.
Playing on the right of a back three, Militao also showed his ability on the ball, having a pass success rating of 91 per cent.
It is a welcome boost to Zidane and Madrid, who are facing up to the ever increasingly likelihood of seeing Varane leave the Bernabeu.
United and Chelsea appear to be the frontrunners to sign Varane, who is reported to be available for £50million.
Varane has enjoyed a successful time in Madrid, helping the club to win four Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles.
But his contract will expire next summer, with talks between the 28-year-old and his current club stalling.
But if Militao continues his fine form, the reigning La Liga champions will not have to spend money they can little afford to bring in a replacement.
