Ramsdale’s dad slams Arteta over goalkeeper battle and begs ‘give him a chance’

Aaron Ramsdale's dad has admitted the goalkeeper has "lost that smile" ever since his place as Arsenal No.1 was taken by summer signing David Raya.

Ramsdale, 25, had been a revelation since he was brought to the club by Mikel Arteta in the summer of 2021. However, eyebrows were raised when Arsenal signed Raya on loan from Brentford, in a deal which could cost up to £27million next summer.

To make matters worse for Ramsdale, Raya's performances have been less than impressive, having made high-profile errors against Chelsea and Newcastle United. When asked about how the England international has been coping, Ramsdale's father, Nick, admitted he has found it difficult to accept.

"Aaron is going to be the cup goalkeeper, and David Raya is going to be the main man unless something happens, an injury or a sending-off," Nick told The Highbury Squad."Aaron’s got to live with that and he is living with that even though he’s not been told it. By anybody. You’ve got to give the guy a chance for God’s sake.

"Even though the way it’s been done, in my eyes, it's been wrong and we can talk about that, but it’s the decision. Aaron’s lost that smile to when he was holding onto that ball at this moment in time.

"It is difficult. It really is difficult to see him there and we all keep saying you need to keep smiling."

Arteta has repeatedly stated he does not view Ramsdale as a No.2 goalkeeper and bought Raya, 28, to increase the level of competition at the club. The Arsenal boss, 41, has also said he has wanted to substitute his goalkeepers in previous matches, but has never had the heart to do so.

Ramsdale has tried to put on a brave face throughout this period on the bench, but has admitted to feeling frustrated. "We push each other in training and there are days where I come in and I’m down because of the situation and he picks me up," Ramsdale recently said.

"And for whatever reason, there might be a day where he’s down and even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing, I have to stand up and be able to push him."
