PSG star Achraf Hakimi has been charged with rape, French prosecutors have confirmed.
Hakimi was questioned by prosecutors from the Hauts-de-Seine Territorial Security on Thursday in connection with accusations from a 24-year-old woman. He has subsequently been charged.
According to reports from L'Equipe, the alleged incident took place at the home of the Moroccan international on February 25 in the location of Boulogne-Billancourt.
Hakimi's lawyer denied the accusations on Thursday. They said: "The accusations are false. He is calm and is making himself available to the authorities."
Hakimi joined PSG in January 2021 and has made 72 appearance for the club, helping them to win the Ligue 1 title last season. Prior to that the 24-year-old had spells at Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan.
French prosecutors opened a preliminary investigation on Thursday into an alleged rape by Hakimi, the BBC reported.
Born in the Spain, the defender played a key part in Morocco's run to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar last year. The north African side reached the last-four before bowing out to France.
Hakimi was also named in the FIFPRO men's world team of the year at the Best Fifa Football Awards on Monday evening. He posed alongside PSG team-mates Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi as he collected the award.
Hakimi has made 27 appearances for PSG this season, scoring four goals. He last featured for the side from the French capital in a 1-0 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich on Valentine's Day.
PSG released a statement earlier this week before Hakimi was charged but after the accusations were brought to light. It read: "The club supports the player, who has firmly denied the accusations and trusts the justice system. Paris St-Germain is an institution that promotes respect on and off the pitch."
