Premier League Team of the Season so far with zero Man Utd stars but four Spurs
The Premier League has thrown up some huge drama and controversy just 12 games into the new season. An unprecedented summer of spending has seen the competition at the top of the table closer than it has been for several years. Amid the final international break until March next year, Express Sport picks the Premier League team of the season so far.
Goalkeeper – Vicario
Fans of English football may not have known too much about Guglielmo Vicario before he joined Tottenham from Empoli in the summer. But they will definitely be aware of the quality he has shown in his first dozen matches.
Vicario has settled into life in north London and made it a seamless transition from Hugo Lloris. Honourable mentions for Liverpool’s Alisson and Sam Johnstone of Crystal Palace.

Defence – Trippier, Saliba, Van de Ven, Udogie
Kieran Tripper has continued his fine form from last season at Newcastle. He is arguably one of the best signings made since the takeover at St James’ Park, already notching six assists this term.
William Saliba’s return to fitness shows how much he was missed by Arsenal at the back end of the last campaign. Alongside him in defence are two more Spurs players in Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie.
Van de Ven, a £43million signing from Wolfsburg, was a revelation before injuring his hamstring in the loss to Chelsea. Udogie has been given his first taste of Premier League football this term and has taken to it like a duck to water.
Crystal Palace duo Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi may feel hard done by to miss out. Virgil van Dijk has also returned to somewhere near his best form at Anfield.

Midfield – Rodri, Rice, Maddison
Rodri’s influence at Manchester City is arguably shown more when he isn’t in the team. After his sending off against Nottingham Forest, City lost back-to-back Premier League matches for the first time since 2018 in his absence.
The Spaniard is a crucial cog for Pep Guardiola, as is James Maddison at Tottenham. He registered three goals and five assists for Spurs in his first 11 league games for the club.
They have lost both games since he suffered an ankle injury against Chelsea. Meanwhile, his England team-mate Declan Rice has proven why Arsenal spent a club-record £105m on him in the summer.
The midfield trio keep out the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Bernardo Silva and Yves Bissouma, who have all had a fine few months.
Attack – Salah, Haaland, Watkins
Erling Haaland is again leading the goalscoring charts with 13 to his name. The Norwegian doesn’t get tired of scoring and could break more records again this season.
Mohamed Salah has put talk of a potential move to Saudi Arabia behind him by scoring 10 goals in the first 12 games. He has also registered four assists for his team-mates and is well on his way to another fine campaign.
Aston Villa have had a stunning start under Unai Emery and their star man has been Ollie Watkins. Six goals and five assists for the forward gets him into this team ahead of Heung-min Son and Julian Alvarez.
