Premier League Q&A: All the latest from Manchester United plus news from Chelsea and Newcastle

Mail Sport’s Ian Ladyman, Craig Hope, Adrian Kajumba, and Matt Barlow answer all the big questions regarding Manchester United, Newcastle, Chelsea, and Tottenham. 

Sofyan Amrabat impressed on his Old Trafford bow. What did he bring to Erik ten Hag’s side, and how important can he be now that his early injury issue appears behind him?

IAN LADYMAN: Amrabat played at left back last night as emergency cover in a position in which United have had injury problems.

His impact will only really be assessed when he plays in his usual role in the centre of midfield. If he succeeds there then he will become pivotal as United’s need in front of the back four is great.

He’s a good player who impressed at the World Cup in that wonderful gutsy Moroccan team. Has he got the legs and the physicality for the Premier League?

That will be the key issue. But he’s made a good start at least.

Q: Hi Ian. Gary Neville described last night’s win over Crystal Palace as Man United's best display of the season. It was only the Carabao Cup, but was it something to get excited about?

IAN LADYMAN: Well any win is a good win when the bar has been set so low as it has been by United this season. Also any win that helps to stop a crisis is building is valuable.

Last season it was a home win against Liverpool in the Premier League. This time it was a League Cup win against Palace. Different opposition but the same purpose served.

I think the devil of last night is in the detail for Erik ten Hag. A good debut for Amrabat, Varane and Mount back from injury, a goal for Garnacho and one for Martial.

These are the things that will have pleased the United manager in a broader sense. It did feel like a step forward for United, if a small one.

First up, Manchester United

Erik ten Hag has challenged Alejandro Garnacho to keep ‘learning’ and get even better, describing his early season form as ‘not good enough’.

Young winger Garnacho, 19, started the opening two league games against Wolves and Tottenham but was handed just 12 minutes of action since coming off in north London, ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Palace.

While United’s travelling fans chanted Garnacho’s name in the hope he would come on in the win at Burnley, Ten Hag ignored the calls and left him benched.

Mason Mount puffed out his cheeks, took a two-step run-up before dropping a dime of a corner right onto the head of an onrushing Casemiro.

As team-mates swarmed towards the Brazilian – his fourth goal this season making it 2-0 and taking the game away from a poor Palace side – Mount threw both arms up, took one look to the sky before turning to the fans to let rip with a fist pump.

With the No 7 on his back it was hard not to draw comparisons to his predecessors in that jersey. The delivery was Beckham-esque in its whip and accuracy and while it would be unfair on Mount to draw any further comparisons in a shirt worn by club legends like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo, this was to be his breakout moment at Manchester United.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has claimed he would have felt ‘ashamed’ had his performances in training been criticised publicly, as he urged Jadon Sancho to apologise to manager Erik ten Hag.

Sancho is currently being kept away from the first team as he continues his stand-off with Ten Hag amid his refusal to apologise for his public comments against his manager.

The £73million winger was exiled from United training after claiming on social media that he had been a 'scapegoat' and effectively calling Ten Hag a liar following defeat at Arsenal.

Erik ten Hag’s side made it back-to-back wins for the first time this season as a much-changed United side dominated proceedings at Old Trafford.
