Premier League officials have confirmed their highest ever return of Covid-19 cases from the latest round of testing – meaning fans now fear another football lockdown is on the cards.
English football was put on hold when the coronavirus first broke out in the UK back in March, before resuming again behind closed doors three months later.
The 2020/21 season was able to commence a month later than usual in September, with players and staff regularly being tested for Covid-19 in order to make it happen.
No top-flight fixtures had been postponed due to the pandemic up until Monday night, when Everton and Manchester City’s clash at Goodison Park was cancelled.
After four members of City’s playing squad and staff tested positive on Christmas Day, another five of their personnel contracted the virus in their latest round of testing on Monday.
The Premier League had no choice but to postpone their meeting on Merseyside as a result, and now another nine Covid-19 cases across the division have been confirmed.
When the news broke out on Tuesday, football fans quickly took to Twitter to express concerns that the game will be suspended again following the latest spike of cases.
One wrote: “18 positive Covid-19 tests in the Premier League. It's inevitable that the season will be paused again soon.”
Another said: “That’s a massive increase!!! It’s only a matter of time before football is postponed again…”
A third commented: “Life is more important than football, so won’t be surprised if footy [goes into] lockdown again.”
While one Liverpool fan took a more light-hearted stance and quipped: “Null and void. Give the premier league to the current champions and league leaders..”

The 18 new Covid-19 cases in the Premier League is an increase of 11 from the previous round of testing.
Since top-flight chiefs began testing ahead of the new season on August 31, the amount of positive tests has only reached double figures five times after 17 rounds of testing.
