Pogba and Alli in contention as UEFA confirm goal of the season shortlist

Paul Pogba and Dele Alli are among the contenders for UEFA's prized Goal of the Season award.

Wantaway Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba made the list for his beautiful curling effort in the second half of France's penalty defeat at the hands of underdogs Switzerland in the Round of 16 of Euro 2020.

The elegant Frenchman received the ball about 30 yards away from the goal, dropped a shoulder, opened his body and caressed the ball into the top-right hand corner of Yann Sommer's goal.

It was the mark of a world-class midfield player who has been linked to Europe's top clubs in recent days. PSG are reportedly at the top of the queue, with only one year left on his current deal at Manchester United.

Out-of-favour Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli is one of the other names included on the shortlist for his goal in the UEFA Europa League in Tottenham Hotspur's 4-0 victory over the Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC in February.

He opened the scoring on the evening with an outrageous bicycle kick that flew into the top corner past the Wolfsberger goalkeeper after a chipped cross from Matt Doherty.

The Tottenham Hotspur No.10 will be looking for more moments like that this upcoming season as he looks to force his way back into the Tottenham squad and England set-up.

England have a wealth of talent in his position, so he will be looking to Spurs' new boss Nuno Espirito Santo to provide a free role for him to flourish if he is going to make headway into Gareth Southgate's plans ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Under Mauricio Pochettino in the 2016/17 season, Dele bagged 18 Premier League goals and was recommended to Jose Mourinho by Sir Alex Ferguson as a potential Manchester United player.

Since then, he has struggled to replicate the form that led Pep Guardiola to dubbing him: "one of the most fantastic footballers I have ever seen in my life."

The early favourite for the award is Patrick Schick. His outrageous effort from the halfway line against Scotland was voted the goal of Euro 2020.

The other nominees include Rangers forward Kemar Roofe, Mehdi Taremi, Florian Wirtz, Lorenzo Insigne, Sarah Zadrazil, Ferrao and Paulinho.
