Paul Merson proved right as Chelsea end Spurs’ unbeaten Premier League start

Paul Merson can take a bow after he silenced his sceptics as his ballsy prediction for Chelsea’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur was proved right.

Merson gave a bold prediction ahead of the clash on Monday which saw a stuttering Blues side head to the only unbeaten side left in the Premier League. The Sky Sports pundit backed Mauricio Pochettino to return to North London and come away with a result against the odds.

And the former Arsenal midfielder proved to be spot on after Chelsea won 4-1 to end Spurs’ unbeaten streak in a chaotic London derby littered with controversy – seeing Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie both sent off for the hosts.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday, Merson gave a ballsy prediction that Chelsea would take something away from the game, he said: “Against both Liverpool and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were the better side in both games,” Merson added. “Both teams had a go at Chelsea and that’s why I feel the trip to Tottenham could be perfect for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

“It’s game on for the Blues on Monday night. There is no question that Spurs will have a go at Chelsea.

“The way they are playing and sitting top of the league, they have no choice but to try and continue in the same vein they have in the opening 10 matches of the season. However, that plays into Chelsea’s hands.

“Nicolas Jackson is getting a bit of stick at the moment but he’s quick and a threat on the counter. Then you’ve got Raheem Sterling on the wing.

“He was brilliant against Arsenal and if he can reach that level again, he’ll cause Spurs problems on the break. Cole Palmer brings the guile and he was different class in the first half against Brentford. Chelsea will be able to give this game a real go. I’d be shocked if Chelsea lost at Spurs.”

Not only was Merse right about the result, but his glowing praise of Jackson was vindicated after the striker scored his first hat-trick for the club after Palmer, another one of Merson’s pre-match shouts, levelled the scores from the penalty spot.
