Owen Hargreaves was left stunned as Man United Andre Onana gifted Bayern Munich the opening goal in their Champions League group stage match.
The Man United goalkeeper allowed Leroy Sane’s weak effort to slip through his grasp in the first half of their tie at the Allianz Arena.
Onana’s mistake was compounded by Man United conceding again before half-time. United eventually fell to a 4-3 defeat after twice fighting back towards the end of a thrilling contest.
Former Man United and Bayern Munich midfielder Hargreaves, speaking on TNT Sports, was shocked by Onana’s error for the opening goal.
‘You just have to save that. I don’t know if he doesn’t get his feet set, but that ball just cannot go in. He knows straight away Onana,’ Hargreaves said.

‘Sane doesn’t get a strong contact on it, he just has to keep that out.
‘He is shaking his head, he is so frustrated. He knows he can’t make that mistake.’
Onana was among the high-profile additions at Man United this summer after joining from Inter Milan for £47m.
The 27-year-old signed a five-year contract with the goalkeeper succeeding David de Gea, who left the club at the end of his deal in June.
‘This is a nightmare scenario for Onana,’ former Man United defender Ferdinand said.
‘He is as confident as you like with his feet. We look at some of the passes, but as a goalkeeper you are paid to come in there and make saves.
‘His reaction afterwards tells you that he should really save this. It is food and drink for him, he should be picking this up and looking for his next pass. ‘
‘It is a very bad mistake and one he needs to recover from.’

Social media users were quick to comment on Onana’s early struggles at Man United
Fellow pundit Paul Scholes added ‘It is a lapse in concentration and bang, bang, you are suddenly 2-0 down.
‘It is a big mistake from him and he needs to recover.’
Social media users were quick to comment on Onana’s early struggles since joining Man United.
‘Andre Onana has faced 12 shots on target since the start of the season. He’s conceded nine goals,’ one user wrote.
‘Onana bro, I can’t defend you,’ a Man United fan admitted.
‘Manchester United needs to apologise to David De Gea, Onana is a downgrade,’ added a third.
