Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope could reportedly miss the rest of this season after suffering a serious shoulder injury in Saturday's 1-0 win over Manchester United.

The Telegraph has reported Pope is 'expected to miss four to five months' following the blow, which was him withdrawn in the 86th minute of Saturday's hard-fought victory. Martin Dubravka – who spent the first half of last season on loan at Old Trafford – replaced him and looks most likely to fill in over the coming months.

England manager Gareth Southgate will also be keeping watch over Pope's condition ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany next year. The former Burnley stopper has earned calls to be included in the Three Lions set-up after impressing during Newcastle's recent rise up the Premier League but failed to feature for his country in their successful qualifying campaign.

Pope, 31, was clearly in discomfort after an attempted save saw him land on his left side and seemingly dislodge his shoulder at the joint. He immediately signalled to the touchline and grimaced as medical staff helped him off the field.

“That’s the disappointment on the night,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe after Saturday's win. “Nick looks like he’s dislocated his shoulder. Such a strange thing, really, because he’d have made that dive thousands of times.

“It looks like maybe the arm has just kept on going, maybe on the moist floor, and his shoulder has come out of his joint. We’re going to have to seek specialist opinion and then see what happens, but it doesn’t look good."

The absence is particularly badly timed at this point in the calendar, with the Magpies facing a crunch encounter at home to AC Milan to decide their Champions League fate on December 13. That's in addition to a Carabao Cup quarter-final at Chelsea on December 19 and league games against Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool, as well as a Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland in the FA Cup, all before the end of January.

It's possible surgery will be required on the joint, and depending on the recovery time, Pope may have made his last save of the season already. That would be a cruel blow to one of the team's most consistent performers since joining last year, leaving Howe with another concern amid Newcastle's recent injury plague.

England internationals Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes have had to endure lengthy spells on the sidelines this season, while Dan Burn, Sven Botman and Joe Willock are among the other names to miss out of late. Howe is also coping with the absence of star summer signing Sandro Tonali, who was banned from football for 10 months stemming from gambling breaches in Italy prior to this year's transfer.
