Neymar was left feeling emotional by the enthusiasm in the Barcelona dressing room for his return to the Nou Camp, according to his father.
The Brazilian star was the subject of endless transfer speculation over the summer as Barcelona and Real Madrid both tried – and ultimately failed – to find ways they could sign him from Paris Saint-Germain.
Friends from the four years he spent at Barcelona between 2013 and 2017, including Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, were eager for the club to find a way of getting Neymar back.
Neymar was touched by the enthusiasm of his former Barcelona team-mates Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez for his return to the Nou Camp over the summer
The trio formed a highly effective attacking unit during their time together at Barcelona
And though a deal wasn’t struck this summer at least the strength of feeling left Neymar feeling loved.
‘A Brazilian only wants to be where he can be happy,’ Neymar Sr, who is also the player’s agent, told Footmercato as reported by Marca.
‘My son was very happy at Barcelona.
‘When his friends asked if he wanted to return, that touched him.’
Despite the player sending plenty of signals that he wanted to leave Paris after just two years and return to Spain, PSG held firm on their high valuation and neither Barca nor Real could match it.
Neymar was left in limbo over the summer as he tried to engineer a move back to Spain
But the Brazilian remains a Paris Saint-Germain player for another few months at least
‘As an agent, you feel weak when there is no structure to allow you to leave and move,’ his father added.
‘There was no release clause in the contract and this made things difficult.
‘We fought to try to reach an agreement. We gave the best of ourselves for him.’
Neymar scored 105 goals in 186 appearances for Barcelona during his time there, forming a devastating attacking triumvirate with Messi and Suarez.
He helped the Catalan club to two league titles, three Spanish Cups, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Both Barcelona and Real are expected to return for Neymar next summer.
