Newcastle ‘add Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams to January shortlist as they prioritise loan signings next month’
- Brandon Williams has only made one league appearance this season
- The arrival of Alex Telles has pushed the left-back down the pecking order
- Steve Bruce is looking for reinforcements at Newcastle after a poor run of form
- The club are likely to only allow loan signings in the upcoming transfer window
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has set his sights on bringing in Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams in January.
According to the Chronicle Live, Bruce is going to have to turn to loan signings in the window which opens in three days, and with Williams struggling for game-time at Old Trafford, the 20-year-old is viewed as a viable option.
It would allow Newcastle to keep funds for a recruitment drive at the end of the season as they look to recuperate the millions lost from gate revenue due to coronavirus restrictions.
Brandon Williams has struggled to break into Manchester United’s starting XI this season
But after an indifferent run of form that has seen them knocked out of the Carabao Cup and without a league victory in four matches, the immediate priority is to bring in new faces as they look to remain competitive in the league.
Newcastle are seven points clear of the relegation zone, and with the likes of Ryan Fraser and Allan Saint-Maximin out of action in the coming weeks, they are looking to bolster their options.
Jamal Lewis has been unchallenged at left-back this season, so one of Bruce’s targets is Williams, who has struggled to work his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.
With Luke Shaw and Alex Telles ahead of him in the pecking order, the 20-year-old has been restricted to five appearances across all competitions this season, despite featuring 36 times during the last campaign.
His flexibility across the back is thought to be a factor in bringing him to St James’ Park, with Southampton also interested.
