Newcastle are eyeing up Crystal Palace shot-stopper Sam Johnstone.

The Magpies need cover for Nick Pope, who is facing four months on the sidelines. And while Eddie Howe has suggested the club are not desperate to make a new signing, it's understood they are ready to sound out Johnstone as cost effective short-term cover.

Toon bigwigs believe Johnstone could be secured for less than £8million, despite the 30-year-old only putting pen to paper on a new contract at Selhurst Park last month, which now runs until 2027. It is felt, though, he could provide competition for the No1 jersey at St James' Park, once Pope has recovered.

Johnstone has been a regular for Roy Hodgson's Palace this season, and the keeper's forced withdrawal late on in Saturday's gutting 2-1 defeat to Liverpool will be a worry for his manager. Remi Matthews had to come on for Johnstone in the 86th minute when he pulled up with a calf problem that could keep him out of action over the Christmas period.

The south Londoners, however, would be willing to cash in come January as Dean Henderson – a £15million purchase from Manchester United in the summer – returns to full fitness.

Free agent and ex-Red Devils star David de Gea is also a serious option for Howe. Although the Spaniard hasn't played since last season, and the Toon have concerns about his lack of recent match action.

Arsenal ace Aaron Ramsdale remains high on Howe's wish list too. But the Gunners are refusing to be rushed into a decision about his future as David Raya's erratic form continues.

In the meantime at Newcastle, Martin Dubravka continues to line up between the sticks. Although he endured a miserable evening at Goodison Park on Thursday as the Magpies were thumped 3-0 by Everton after a late onslaught.

Ex-Liverpool keeper Loris Karius is also available to be called upon in reserve for now.
