Newcastle are hoping to prise him away at the end of this campaign but will put forward an offer of around £8m.
As with striker Odsonne Edouard, Celtic’s optimum time to sell would have been last summer but they wanted both key players to stay and help them secure 10 league titles in a row. After failing in that objective, they are now looking at a huge summer overhaul.
Norwich and AC Milan have also expressed interest however the Norway international believes regular football at Newcastle can provide the ideal next step up in his career.
Having attracted suitors from all over Europe, Ajer has been urged to leave this summer by national team manager Stale Solbakken because the Scottish Premier League doesn’t offer enough challenges.

Solbakken insisted: ‘He has to change league now. He must. He does not have enough challenges in everyday life there.’
Norway assistant and Fulham defender Brede Hangeland echoed the sentiment saying he has called Ajer several times to say he needed a move to challenge himself.
Newcastle are working to a limited budget as they await updates on their proposed takeover. They also want to add a midfielder.
