Newcastle United have made their first signing under their new ownership, with England star joining the Toon in a £12million two-and-a-half-year deal from Atletico Madrid.

The Magpies are set for a busy January transfer window with new boss Eddie Howe desperate for reinforcements in a bid to stave off the threat of relegation from the Premier League.

The club’s new owners – led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – have given Howe their backing this window and have made a statement signing in landing Trippier from LaLiga champions Atletico.

England international Trippier has been eyeing a return to England to be closer to his family

The 31-year-old touched down on Tyneside on Wednesday afternoon and went to the club’s training ground to undergo a medical.

Newcastle began negotiations on the deal in December, with Trippier making it plain to Diego Simeone and the powers that be at Atletico that he wished to return to England to be closer to his family.

The former Spurs defender has also been drawn by the prospect of working with Howe, who first signed him for Burnley nearly 10 years ago.

It is a statement of intent from the club’s new backers, with Trippier the first current England international to play for Newcastle since Andy Carroll in 2010.

Trippier has 35 caps and was a key member of Gareth Southgate’s squad that reached the Euro 2020 final last year.

The signing is anticipated to be the first of many throughout the month at St James’ Park, with Howe also keen to add quality in key positions.

The next priority is understood to be a centre back, with Lille’s Sven Botman the prime target. More additions in defence and a centre forward are also thought to be key targets before the window shuts.

The Magpies are currently 19th in the Premier League table, two points adrift of Watford in 17th, having won just one league game this season.
