Newcastle aiming for second biggest stadium in the Prem with huge expansion

Newcastle could eventually have the second-biggest ground in the Premier League as they explore a massive expansion plan.

St James’ Park currently has a healthy capacity of just over 52,000, making it the seventh-biggest stadium in the top flight. However, with St James’ regularly selling out, it still isn’t big enough to accommodate the Geordie hordes.

Therefore, the Magpies have launched a feasibility study looking into how the Gallowgate End and East Stand could be expanded, reports The Telegraph. It is estimated, if those stands can be enhanced, the capacity could rise to around 65,000, creating a bowl-like venue.

If the plans come to fruition, it would make St James’ the second-biggest club ground in the country and third-biggest football stadium in the UK, with just Wembley and Manchester United’s Old Trafford ahead of it. But before the ambitious plans can go forward, Newcastle are waiting to hear back from architects about what is possible, add The Telegraph.

Given the Magpies’ Saudi backing, cost is unlikely to be a stumbling block but building on land outside the stadium could present issues. The East Stand, where work could begin, has listed buildings directly behind it. Meanwhile, the club recently bought land behind the Gallowgate End, where a new fan zone is under construction and due to open in 2024. Therefore, it is said the club would prefer to develop the East Stand first.

The Newcastle board will reportedly consider all options but they are determined to increase capacity somehow given the huge clamour for tickets. Manager Eddie Howe has admitted he would welcome an increased capacity.

He said: “I’d love to see it expanded. If it can be done, I’m sure the club will do it at some point. That’s very much the club’s philosophy.

“If we can push things forward and improve things for the supporters, for everybody, the club will do it. But it’s not simple, it’s not a simple process but we would love to get more supporters inside the stadium.”
