New European Super League would see Champions League axed with decision imminent
The European Super League could be set to return with a new proposal to establish the breakaway competition facing its day in court this week.
Fifteen judges at the European Court of Justice could shatter UEFA's jurisdiction over European football. A22 Sports are hoping to be given the green light to push ahead with plans for a new breakaway league.
And they're hoping to ask 80 teams if they would like to join the new competition. The ESL would usurp the Champions League as football's most premier competition, and it would generate television revenues that would eclipse the current Premier League TV package.

Bernd Reichart, the German who is leading A22’s challenge to UEFA, said: “Hopefully the judges will seize the opportunity to recast European sport. We want to end monopolies like UEFA, which is a private association with accumulated power of regulator, judge, jury and executioner!
"It (UEFA) leads to conflicts of interest and abuse of power. They govern the sport but do not bear responsibility within Europe."

Six English clubs were part of the original plans that fell through in April 2021: Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.
Reichart added: "Surely it cannot be that the (UEFA) monopoly is okay and the conventions of Europe do not apply to sport? If we have a licence to compete then we then have to convince clubs that our alternative model is better for their future.
“Clubs can then run a European league themselves as the Premier League and Bundesliga already do nationally.
"We hope to create a European Super League with 60 to 80 clubs, which means you also offer a perspective to big clubs from small leagues like, for example, Celtic, with guaranteed income. That makes clubs future-proof."
