Cardiff manager Neil Harris has backed the sacking of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

The 28-year-old had his contract terminated by the Bluebirds having made 92 appearances for the club, and scoring 14 goals since joining from Rochdale back in 2017.

Harris has described the mysterious incident as a ‘serious breach of contract’ before stating the further details of the circumstances may never be revealed to supporters.

Mendez-Laing’s representatives Fifteen Eleven Management said at the time: "Following on from today's announcement that I have left Cardiff City FC, I would like to place on record my thanks to the fans for the support they have shown me over the past three years. I will be making no further comment at this time."

“I can confirm that Nathaniel’s contract was terminated because of a serious breach of contract, but I can’t add any more to it at the moment because of legal protocols,” said Harris.

“Due to the severity of the situation I was asked my opinion. It is a football club decision, and I am a part of the club, and yes I am comfortable with it.

“It’s a decision that hasn’t been taken lightly, it’s a serious decision. A lot of thought has gone into it, but ultimately a decision was taken for the best interest of Cardiff City Football Club.

“Time will tell if anything else can be announced. It is important that I focus on the players who are working under me now.

“Nathaniel has proved himself to be a very good player at this level and only time will tell what the future holds for him.”

Former Millwall boss Harris went on to describe how the sacking won’t have an impact on his side’s start to the new Championship season, which begins against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

“We have spoken about it as a group and we are fully focussed on Saturday. The training session today was immense and we all move on as a group,” he added.

“It is important that we focus on Sheffield Wednesday. It has been a difficult period, but I am looking forward to the weekend.”
