Mesut Ozil in ‘advanced talks’ with MLS side as Arsenal exit finally nears

Arsenal: Arteta tells Lacazette to focus on pitch

Mesut Ozil is one step closer to sealing a move away from Arsenal, finally ending his Gunners nightmare. The German is in advanced discussions with MLS side DC United.

The 32-year-old has been completely cut out of Mikel Arteta’s Gunners plans and was not included in his Premier League or Europa League squads.

Despite featuring regularly for the Spaniard after his appointment last December, Ozil has not played a single minute for the Gunners this season.

Ozil’s contract is up in the summer and he has previously vowed to see out the mega-money deal he signed in January 2018. The playmaker earns £350,000-a-week and will earn loyalty bonuses if he stays past the January transfer window.

He can now discuss his future with other clubs and, according to Football.London, it seems negotiations have already reached an advanced stage with DC United.

It is reported an ‘attractive package’ has been presented to Ozil with the proposal of expanding his M10 brand across the United States. Not only this, but Ozil has been promised the expansion of his ’39 Steps Coffee’ brand in their Audi Field stadium. As well as his own merchandise line and making him the face of the MLS club.

If Ozil does cross the pond, he would follow in the footsteps of former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney. Before returning to England and signing for Derby, Rooney spent two years in the MLS, making 52 appearances and scoring 25 goals.

Arteta was asked about the potential of Ozil leaving in January and responded: “We will see what happens in the transfer window and we will assess at the end of that.”

And when previously discussing the awkward scenario of Ozil and his remaining deal, Arteta said: “You have to respect the players’ contracts.

“What you can do is just try to be open with them, tell them your intentions, the role that they have in the team and why that is. They are entitled to make the decision in their lives because they have a contract here.

“Some would like to move because they are not playing and some would like to stay. That’s something we cannot decide by ourselves.”

Ozil’s news follows that of William Saliba, another player who was cut from Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squads.

The defender this week sealed a loan move to Nice.
